Ten
Years Searching..! |
|||
|
I
first visited the Fylingdales moors in 1992 in search of the
elusive cup and ring marked stones noted by
the late Stuart Feather in 1966.
Naively i thought i would walk straight to the appropriate area of the moor and find the carved rocks there about. How wrong i was! After ten years of searching these moors the last of the carved stones listed by Mr. Feather has been located in October 2003. Mr Feather made a short tantalising list of almost twenty carved stones and over the last ten years with luck, perseverance and the help of friends, i had managed to re-locate almost all of them. However one cluster of cup and ring marked stones still remained unaccounted for. The moorland fire that swept across this area in September 2003 has scarred the moors for many years to come. But wildlife has started to return to the burnt areas and green shoots are evident. The fire also cleared areas that were deep in vegetation and in one of these locations the last of Mr Feather's Cup and ring stones were finally tracked down. Although the carvings are very eroded they consist of Cup, cups and rings (single and double rings) with grooves and channels, including a rectangular motif. Several more carved stones have also come to light since the fire and these are been recorded for inclusion in the North York Moors rock art database. GC
